"Standing upright in the centre of a rectangular shrine on the west bank of the East Black Sike, the most easterly of the tributaries flowing from the south into the Eller Beck at a point 37 m. from the confluence. The site is 1.8 km. west-north-west of the farmhouse called Spanham on Scargill Moor in the parish of Barningham, North Riding (O.S. one-inch map, 7th series, grid ref. NY 999 105) and is 3.2 km. south of the Roman fort of Bowes" (RIB 732)
