Explanations of the field Inscription type

Note: In cases where the monument carries several inscriptions of various inscription types or the text contains various different aspects (e.g. votive inscription and building inscription), entry is made of the type of inscription, the aspects of which are more dominant; the other inscription type is noted in the field "Commentary".

Acclamation
  • Exclamations; invocations.
  • Campaign slogans, congratulations, aphorisms.
  • Not in the case of Defixio or Invocations to God (see Prayer).

  • Proclamation; announcement (e.g. of munera).

Assignation inscription
  • Allocation of  assembly places and land.

  • Boundary marks of all types;
    itinera privata.
  • Also in the case of grave cippi, as long do not contain an Epitaph

Building / dedicatory inscription
  • Also in the case of repaired monuments.

Calendar
  • Permanent calendar;
    list of all days of the year with indication of market days and holidays.
  • Not Fasti or Feriale (see List).
 
Defixio
  • Curse, imprecations.
 
Elogium
  • Honorand in the nominative with list of deeds
    (see Label, Honorific inscription).
 
Epitaph
  • Not in the case of grave cippi, which state the size of the grave area (see Boundary inscription).
 
Honorific inscription
  • Honorand in the dative
    (see Label, Elogium).
 
Identification inscription
  • Designation of objects / contents;
    labelling necessary for daily use
    (e.g. shop signs, tabulae lusoriae, sundials).
  • Notes, scrawlings, public writing exercises
    (not necessarily originally involved with the object).
  • Not Acclamation, Label, Owner / artist inscription, Defixio, Prayer, Seat inscription.
 
Label
  • Designation of the representation of a figure
    (in the case e.g. of graffiti, mosaics, reliefs, herms or statues).
  • Not honorary in character (see Elogium, Honorific inscription).

List
  • Lists of all sorts;
    Fasti (= magistrate lists; also annals, e.g. AE 1978, 0062) or
    Feriale (= Celebrations of the past, sorted by year;
    cf. on the other hand Calender);
    Cadastral land register.

  • Consul lists
  • Acta fratrum Arvalium
Milestone
  • Also in the case of distance measured in leugae.
  • League stone
Military diploma
  • Also privately issued tabulae honestae missionis.

Owner / artist inscription
  • Name of the owner, the producer, the artist or the atelier;
    Name in the nominative (sc. "fecit"), in genitivus possessivus or sometimes in the accusative.
  • Certificate.
  • Also for the specifiaction of place or date of production;
    Stamp of an eye specialist (so far as the doctor is mentioned).
  • Not in the case of Seat inscription.

Prayer
  • Invocation to God
    (see Acclamation).

Private legal inscription
  • Made by a private person and in private matters.
  • Also contracts and agreements.
  • Will
Public legal inscription
  • Made by an institution or a person in that person's public function.
  • Also contracts and agreements.
  • City law
  • Senatus consultum
Seat inscription
  • Designation of the holder of a specific seat in e.g. the theatre
    (cf. on the other hand Identification inscription and Owner / artist inscription).
 
Votive inscription
  • Dedication to a deity
    (cf. on the other hand Prayer).
